How to Prepare a Delicious Chicken Biryani Recipe: A Step-by-Step Guide


Chicken Biryani is a flavorful and aromatic rice dish that originated in the Indian subcontinent. It is a one-pot meal that combines succulent chicken pieces with fragrant basmati rice and a blend of spices. This dish is loved by people all over the world for its rich and complex flavors.


  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 500g chicken, cut into pieces
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons biryani masala powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro leaves
  • 1/4 cup chopped mint leaves
  • 4 cups water
  • 4 tablespoons ghee
  • Salt to taste


1. Wash the basmati rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain.

2. Heat 2 tablespoons of ghee in a large pot over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until golden brown.

3. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the pot and cook for another minute.

4. Add the chicken pieces to the pot and cook until they are browned on all sides.

5. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, green chilies, biryani masala powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for 5 minutes until the tomatoes are soft.

6. In a separate pan, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of ghee. Add the soaked and drained rice and sauté for 2 minutes.

7. Add the sautéed rice to the pot with the chicken and spices. Pour in the water and bring it to a boil.

8. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for 20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the chicken is tender.

9. Once the biryani is done, remove it from heat and let it rest for 10 minutes. Garnish with chopped cilantro and mint leaves.


Chicken Biryani is best served hot with raita, a yogurt-based side dish, and some pickles. Enjoy this delicious and aromatic dish with your family and friends!
